Secure Your ID Day 10/17/2009 Statistics
Taking a large bite out of Arkansas Identity theft
by Mike Rohrer
To say that the Better Business Bureau’s 4th National Secure Your ID Day was another huge success is a bit of an understatement. The event was held on Saturday, October, 17 at our usual time from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The new twist for this event was multiple locations. The main site was at the BBB office located at 12521 Kanis Road. We added a second location Conway at the Bear’s Den, corner of Salem and Dave Ward Drive.
During that four hour period, over 275 vehicles passed through the Conway and Little Rock locations. Our goal for the October event was to securely collect, shred, and recycle, 12 tons of material containing personal identifiers. Not only did we surpass our previous Arkansas single day record of 8 tons, we passed our October goal as well. When the dust settled, the total weight we collected, shredded, and recycled was just over 16 tons!
Did you know that 56 % of identity theft can be prevented? Identity theft and identity fraud are crimes of opportunity. The sad part is WE are responsible for the 56% that can be prevented. Any lost or stolen document that contains any personal identifiers can be used for identity theft or identity fraud. Identity thieves are getting smarter and more ingenious when it comes to stealing personal information. Responsible disposal of your documents, such as bank and credit card statements, credit card offers, pay stubs and more, can drastically decrease the risk of your identity being stolen.
The BBB is advocating, “If you don’t need it, destroy it – responsibly.”
A key goal of this initiative was to raise consumer and small business awareness for - and help protect against - identity theft and fraud. Participants were able to watch their sensitive documents being shredded on the spot, FREE OF CHARGE!
As is with any successful event, all that was accomplished would not have been possible without the support of committed sponsors. The BBB would like to thank the following Accredited Businesses for their support of the Better Business Bureau’s Secure Your ID Day, and the fight against identity theft.
